Thriving with Invisible Disabilities

Every day, countless people face battles that aren’t immediately visible to the outside world. For one of Interact Australia’s (Interact) staff, Lawrence Autar, life is a journey defined by perseverance, despite the challenges posed by what is often termed an ‘invisible disability’.

Lawrence has sarcoidosis, a chronic inflammatory condition that flares up without warning, leaving him physically drained and unable to maintain his usual routine. He also lives with attention deficit disorder and depression, conditions that add complexity to his daily life. “Some days are harder than others, but the hardest part is that people can’t always see what you’re going through,” Lawrence said.

Seven years ago, Lawrence experienced one of the toughest periods of his life. A severe sarcoidosis flare-up left him unable to work or pay his rent in Sydney. “It was one of the lowest points of my life. The next thing I knew, I was in an Interact office in Queensland using Disability Employment Services.”

Interact, part of the IntoWork Group, recognised Lawrence’s resilience and potential. They offered him a position as a Recruitment Partner when he needed it most. With their ongoing support, Lawrence not only regained his footing but has thrived, remaining gainfully employed over the past six years.

Through its businesses, including Interact and Help Enterprises, the IntoWork Group demonstrates its ongoing commitment to an inclusive workforce by employing many individuals with disabilities and providing specialised services that understand and address their unique needs.

Lawrence’s experience at Interact clearly shows the significance of a supportive work environment for employees, particularly those dealing with health challenges or disabilities.

He knows how such support can make a crucial difference to someone’s overall well-being, saying, “The IntoWork Group have supported me as much as they can throughout this, and I just can’t put it into words really. My condition could deteriorate and cripple me if I didn’t stay on top of it. So that’s why the support and flexibility from the IntoWork Group is so important.”

Drawing from his past, Lawrence uses his experiences to help others. Living with an invisible disability has taught him to be compassionate and patient, both with himself and others. “When I open up to clients and connect with them at a personal level regarding my journey and overcoming my illness to get back into work, it just gives them confidence.”

For Interact’s CEO, Jamie Barden, greater levels of understanding about invisible disabilities supports better service for participants, acknowledging Lawrence’s firsthand experience provides a unique perspective on overcoming these challenges.

“He continues to push forward, drawing on his own experiences to support others. As a Recruitment Partner, he has helped countless people with disabilities, injuries, and illnesses find meaningful work, understanding their struggles better than many,” Mr Barden said.

“Sharing my story isn’t just about me—it’s about raising awareness for all the people who live with invisible disabilities every day,” Lawrence says. “You never know what someone is going through. A little kindness and understanding can make a big difference.”
